Eligibility Criteria

The Serviam Scholarship for New Austrians is proud to honor the contributions of continuing generations of immigrants and refugees to Austria. 

​

Applications are not reviewed on a rolling basis. All eligibility requirements apply to the status of the applicant ("you") as of June 30, 2022. If named a finalist, you will be required to provide documentation of your eligibility. 

​

To be eligible for the 2022/2023 Serviam Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements as of the June 30, 2022 application deadline:

​

1. NEW AUSTRIAN STATUS

The Serviam Scholarship is intended for children of immigrants and refugees in Austria.

​

To be eligible, your birth parents must have both been born outside of Austria as non-Austrian citizens, and both parents must not have been eligible for Austrian citizenship at the time of their births.* 

 

In addition, one of the following must be true of you as of the June 30th application deadline:

​

Born in Austria: You are an Austrian citizen by birth and both of your parents were born abroad as non-Austrian citizens.

​

Born abroad:

 

Naturalized Citizen: You have been naturalized as an Austrian citizen either on your own or as a minor child under the application of one of your parents.

​

Adopted: You were born outside of Austria or one of its territories and were subsequently adopted by Austrian parents and were awarded Austrian citizenship because of your adoption.

​

Refugee & Asylees: You have been granted asylum or refugee status in Austria.

​

​

* If you were raised by only one of your birth parents, the following must be true:

​

The parent who raised you must have been born abroad as a non-Austrian citizen.

​

Your second birth parent was not part of your life growing up and you have no contact with them.

​

2. ACADEMIC STANDING

The Serviam Scholarship for New Austrians program is intended for children of immigrants or refugees who are eligible to attend St. Ursula in Vienna, Austria but do not have the funds to pay for tuition and other fees. You should be planning to be enrolled full-time at St. Ursula for the academic year you are applying. Scholarship awardees are not permitted to be working full-time or part-time during the academic year.

3. AGE

The Serviam Scholarship for New Austrians is intended between the ages of 5 years and 19 years. All students must be 5 years or older as of the application deadline. To be eligible for the 2022/2023 school year Scholarship, you must not have reached or passed your 18th birthday as of the application deadline. The minimum age requirement is 5 years.



 

APPLICATION:

Write an essay - maximum length 1000 words

Applicants under 13 may have a guardian or parent write an essay on their behalf.

​

Prompt: Tell us about your (and your child’s) experiences as a New Austrian. Whether as an immigrant or refugee yourself, or as a child of immigrants, how have your experiences as a New Austrian informed and shaped who you/or your child are?

​

Feel free to discuss how individual people (such as family or teachers), institutions, aspects of law, culture, society or Austrian governance made an impact on your life as an immigrant (refugees) or child of immigrants. The program is interested in understanding the context of your personal and academic life.

The application must include:

A confirmation of your eligibility

Your essay

Your personal and contact information

Documentation of your financial need.
